Processing and characterization of highly oriented fibres of biodegradable nanocomposites
2015
Abstract Biodegradable polymeric materials are becoming day by day ever more important in packaging, agriculture, single-use cutleries and other large consumer applications. The major part of those materials is used under the form of film, i.e. subjected to elongational flow, but the main problem is that they often offer poor mechanical properties. Adding nanofillers, like Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) may solve this problem but only if there is a full control of their orientation inside the material. Aim of this work is to investigate the processing-properties-morphology relationships for a system prepared under elongation flow of MaterBi and commercial MWCNTs. The materials were …
A 'gateway city' between landscape and cultural heritage
2015
The paper analyzes the achievable strategic role that the porto of Porto Empedocle (sinergy by Agrigento, its "city mother") could have. This marginal city, localized in the center of the African side of the Sicily, is far from European politics, but this situation could change. It's necessary to improve the sea routes and to activate the disused railway line from Porto Empedocle to Castelvetrano (near Trapani). This solution will help the accessibility of Agrigento and the development of the little coastal towns organized in a slow and sustainable network.
2013
The city which sprawls through a territory no longer has spacial boundaries; consequently the urban system leads to a noticeable and unavoidable increase in the need for mobility. This mobility has a “fondamental” role in urban sustainablity (these themes are present in many studies). The contemporary city is organized only for people who use cars and does not help people to move freely; Illich said that it’s only possible to have “productive social relationships” at cycling speed and we say that slow mobility can contribute to a better "quality of life in cities”. This paper will consider the role of this type of mobility in a particular case study: a sprawling city – characterized only by…
Grain boundary ridges slow dawn grain boundary motion: In-situ observation
2014
Abstract The impact of grain boundary (GB) ridge on motion of high-angle GB in Zn was studied. The steady-state motion of faceted GB half-loop with [ 10 1 ¯ 0 ] tilt GB and GB ridge was recorded in-situ. The temperatures of faceting–roughening transition were experimentally defined for three GB half-loops. Above the transition temperature GB half-loops had GB “rough-to-rough” ridge with continuously curved GB segments. Below the transition temperature a facet appeared and coexisted with two “facet-to-rough” ridges. For the first time we could extract mobility of “rough-to-rough” and “rough-to-facet” ridges and bring out clearly that GB ridge slows down GB motion. Present removes contradicti…
Mobilità e Urbanistica nella città diffusa
2014
The town that spreads in the territory no longer has “limits”, this urban sprawl produces the use of the land and an inevitable increase in demand for mobility. Since the contemporary town, organized only for those who use their car, does not guarantee those who want to move using public transport so a “slow” mobility could contribute to improving the quality of life in towns. This study reflects on a case study characterized by a continuous urbanization – a widespread town traveled “quickly” - to transform it, with sustainable urban planning and a multidisciplinary approach, in a landscape to cross through the design of different paths for different “speed”, for different types of users.
